Toying with their catch

Our two cats are notorious for stalking the prey they want to catch. Shadow will catch something and bring it to the door as a gift for me. She will yowl a very loud cry to let me know she has something. I will not open the door when she brings gifts like that. It can be anything from a large bug, lizard, bird, skank, and the other day both of them cornered a black snake and was toying with it until they got bored. At one point the snake actually jumped into an azalea bush, but Shadow kept shaking the bush until it fell out. Black Beauty continued when Shadow got bored, then she left it coiled in a ball. The next time I looked it was gone. It must have escaped. But, I did get photos and video of them toying with it! It was totally fascinating watching them, as they usually don't get along, but this they were doing together. Most of the time Shadow just plays with them and lets them go or they die from the torture. Black Beauty probably kills her prey. She is more like a panther with her prey.

Wonderful video, thanks :-)

Black snakes are generally not venomous and do a lot of good by getting rid of mice, so you might want to bear it in mind :-)

That is what I figured De Greek :O) The video was taken from inside the house! I didn't want that snake anywhere near the house. Hubby is scared to death of snakes. I'm fairly sure it slinked away breathing a sigh of relieve when they got bored. Mice wouldn't stand a chance with these two cats, plus all the feral ones around lately. Not to mention the neighbors that attacks mine.

Oh, cats do love to hunt. (I call them homicidal maniacs) We have headless rodents on our patio all of the time, and I do mean, ALL of the time. How can an animal look so darn cute as it decapitates a living thing?

Loved the video!

Hi mulberry1..ours are a pain in the butt but are also a riot. They amuse us and frustrate us. 5 plus years with us and people said they are so spoiled that they wouldn't run away no matter what we did. We complain about them, then let them get away with ruling our every move :O) We are litterally their slaves(staff) we just do it automatically without thinking!! They meow just right and we usually jump and probably give the behavior of how high :O) I fill my camera with so many photos my computer is lugged down and memory is almost FULL!!!

Great pics, read and video of cats that love to hunt. I once read that the common house cat is the best killer in the animal kingdom, trapping and killing a wider variety of species and bugs than any other creature. They are amazing hunters and love to do it. It's such an art to watch. I enjoyed your work on cats and hunting. Thanks, Katie :)
