Hydrating Your Body

Many of us don't stop to think of how important drinking water daily is to our bodies. While visiting with a couple of our grandchildren in another state. I didn't drink enough water and became very dehydrated.

I am a water drinker. We took water to travel there, but the water when we arrive at where we were staying a couple of days was not good to drink and I had finished what we had brought. Trying to drink to keep my body hydrated, I drank soda and juice. It doesn't work for me, because I can't drink enough to satisfy my bodies need. Too much sugar which gives me a headache. Add to that the temps were in the 90's and I don't usually spend much time outside because of my medications and sensitive skin.

It was a dry temp so very deceptive even though I tried to stay out of the sun. But spent quite a bit of time taking small videos of the grandchildren playing with a new ball return their dad had bought them.

The second day their dad bought a couple gallons of water so I drank a few glasses of it. But by the end of the day I started not feeling to good. Thinking it was something I might of ate.

They have two dogs and it was fun trying to get good pictures of them. I am a camera nut. They are like children in and out of the house following everyone. Trying hard to get the ball from the children.

Next day we left to start home and spend some time with our oldest son and family on the way back home. They made a big turkey dinner and it was great. I drank lots of water while there, but in the evening kept getting very nauseous. It was quite bad by the time I decided to retire for the night.

In the morning everyone had a big breakfast, but I only had a dry piece of toast. Traveling back home, I became unable to focus on driving. Didn't feel quite right. I seemed to feel better for a day, then gradually couldn't eat and was nauseous and have bad dry heaves.

Hubby was scared. All the same signs when my body shut down last July 2008. I called the doctor and at first was told no appointments available for a couple of days. The nurse talked to my doctor and she wanted to see me early in the morning the next day. By then I was really getting bad.

They took blood, urine test, and ex-ray's fearing a blockage or scar tissue. My blood pressure and weight was up. I was very dehydrated and had iv fluids right there in the office. An anti nauseous needle of medicine that hurt like the devil. And prescription for the nauseous pills to fill. Within a couple of days felt much better. It is VERY important to drink WATER daily. Soda and juices only take away  the important fluid you need to hydrate.

GiftedGrandma, you are so right about good old fashioned water. When I was young, I never really drank enough water. I was listless and draggy, often dizzy. What an idiot. Now, I always make sure I have enough to drink and pester others to do so as well. Hope you are feeling well,

love, Dolores

Thank you Delores...my doctor set me straight on that issue. We always take a water container(water jug) from home, but since I have medical issues needing to be sure I have enough water. I was told to buy water on the trips to carry as well :O)The first stop had water in the refrigerator door, but it was obvious from the taste it wasn't filtered and not used. It was disgusting(yuck). My granddaugter tried it as well and spit it out in the sink. She and her brother was visiting her dad. I am doing much better a bit parinoid about how much I drink each day.

Water is very important. Sounds like you had a very scary event, good warning to everyone. Glad you've got it under control!

I can truly appreciate you writing about and sharing your personal experiences with all of us, however you fail to point out exactly why it is that drinking water daily is life saving. I would suggest editing your title to "My experience with dehydration".

Just a thought.

Drink plenty of fluids and take care. ;-)
