Sweet or Hot Peppers

This past season on of our neighbors gave us some seedlings of peppers and tomatoes for our garden planters. My husband thanked him and planted them without taking much note of what they might be, other than planting the tomatoes in one spot and the peppers in another. We have never grown peppers here, so didn't know what to expect. They grew beautifully before our heat wave struck.

Peppers Turning Red

After reading one of those plastic inserts that come with the plant, I discovered that they turn from yellow to red when they are ripe. One type was "Sweet Banana" and the other was "Cayenne" to late on the hot pepper as I didn't read up on it until after the fact. I cut into them and stripped them of their seeds and membrane without a second thought. Later after washing some dishes, I discovered my right hand burned strangely. That is when I remembered about the seeds and membrane containing most of the heat. Will not happen again, it is a horrible feeling to sensitive skin. But there is health benefits that might be connected to hot red peppers.

Tasty Sweet Red Peppers

While making sauce for spaghitti, I decided to use the red sweet peppers in the sauce. It was delicious. Adding a couple of the tomatoes from the garden chopped up also gave added texture to the sauce as well. It gives me more ideas with garden vegetables for next season.

Great hub, I grew tomatoes, bell peppers, cayenne, banana, jalapeno's and habenjaro's (sorry about the spelling) I always like growing peppers of all kinds. This year I planted the cayenne with the banana and got a few red banana peppers which are real good, the sweet with the fire. Peace!! Tom

Wow! Tom how did they manage to combine flavors? Sounds good. Our sweet banana peppers turned red, but they weren't hot. Planted right together as well.

They were hot and I love it! I've never tried mixing them before.

I shared a garden with my sister-in-law. She grew these and I was able to take some home (green, orange and red). Yummy.

I love them Sandyspider, but peppers don't love me they give huge heartburn but I deal with that for sauces! Tonight is going to be spaghitti night :O)
